Arthur Arnold

Arthur Arnold, Music Director and Conductor of the Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific, studied conducting with Anton Kersjes in the Netherlands. He undertook practical training with Marcello Viotti, Jean Fournet and Graeme Jenkins. In 1996 he was awarded by the “Prins Bernhard Foundation” to study at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena (Italy) with Myung-Whun Chung. He was given the Busenhart Morgan-Evans scholarship to participate in masterclasses with Diego Masson, Jorma Panula and Gianluigi Gelmetti. In England he conducted Rigoletto, Don Giovanni and Falstaff during the Dartington International Summer School of Music. (’96, ’97, ’98).

Arthur Arnold has been assistant conductor of Hans Vonk. He assisted the maestro with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra (USA), Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra Holland, Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra and The Netherlands Opera.

In 1997 Arnold became principal guest conductor of the Chopin Symphony Orchestra, Warsaw. In July 1999 he conducted Seoul National Symphony Orchestra and was appointed to be their principal guest conductor.

In 2001 Arnold made his debut in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra and soloists from the Boshoi Theatre with Rimsky-Korsakov’s Mozart and Salieri. The Parool reviewed: “Arnold looks already like a tried and tested conductor. He has a comfortable small and extremely musical beat and maintains a forcing and inspiring eye contact with the musicians.” Two weeks later he conducted the Russians in Amsterdam with Stravinsky’s Firebird. The NRC wrote: “Arthur Arnold radiates serenity and natural authority. He conducted this great repertoire in grand style and in tranquil tempi that allowed the typical Russian sound of the orchestra to flourish, thanks to an excellent balance.” Arnold and the orchestra were invited back to the Concertgebouw in 2002 and 2003. Meanwhile he works with the MSO regularly in Moscow and has concerts in the famous Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. This summer he conducted them again in the Concertgebouw with soloists from the Bolshoi Theatre in Tchaikovsky’s Onjegin and in a Russian symphonic program. The Trouw wrote: “Arnold succeeded to achieve imediately a great musical tension and thrilling atmosphere in the Tchaikovsky Romeo & Juliette overture and the build up of this work was magisterial. It’s almost impossible to ruin tchaikovsky’s love-theme but played like tonight it is one of the most beautiful melodies ever written” and “With the excellent build up and colour of this piece Arnold was able to inspire every single musician of the orchestra”

Among the 11 works Arnold conducted during the 2002 Asian Contemporary Music Festival with the Nieuw Ensemble from the Netherlands, three world premieres were performed.

Future engagements include invitations back to Russia and the Gelders Orkest in Arnhem, the Netherlands, with a Russian program. Last September Arnold conducted the Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra in a Brahms/ Kodály program.
