The Elmer Iseler AwardBest Performance of a Canadian WorkSaskatoon Children's Choir (Canada) |
This new award 'Best Performance of a Canadian Work' is given in memory of Dr. Elmer Iseler by Mr. & Mrs. W.J. Vanderhoevan. Dr. Iseler, founder and conductor of the Festival Singers of Canada and the Elmer Iseler Singers, was a champion of Canadian choral music through recordings, performances, commissions and conference workshops. His work has left a lasting impact on choral music in Canada. It is fitting that the award was given for the performance of the "Mi'kmaq Honour Song" composed by Lydia Adams, long time accompanist for Dr. Iseler and present conductor of the Elmer Iseler Singers. |
The Choir of the World at Kathaumixw AwardSympaatti Choir (Finland) Pekka Nikula-conductor |
Travelling from Finland, Sympaatti Choir is making it's second appearance at Kathaumixw. All members of the choir are in music classes in Tampere high schools. Over the past years Sympaatti Choir has toured many European countries. It has released three recordings and performed with the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. In the many festivals and competitions they have entered since 1981 they have always excelled in their choral art. Their dresses were designed by the textile artist Virpi Kinnumen and describe the young birch forest in springtime and the northern lights in wintertime. Sympaatti was established and is still conducted by Pekka Nikula. Mr. Nikula has been working as a teacher and a principal in music classes in Tampere, Finland since 1976. In that time he and the the choirs have made 15 television programs, music cassettes for schoolbooks, several radio programs and recordings with Finnish artists and orchestras. Mr. Nikula has also worked as an artist director of choir camps arranged by the Association of Finnish Youth Choirs and is a member of the administrative board of that association. |
